Faster transfers need clear checks before a customer presses send. The European Central Bank’s overview of the Instant Payments Regulation pairs instant euro transfers with rules on charges and verification of the intended recipient. It says payee verification must be free and applies to both standard and instant credit transfers. [1]
The euro-area deadline for sending instant payments and introducing payee verification was 9 October 2025. The implementation schedule is staggered: payment institutions and electronic money institutions have separate deadlines, while several non-euro-area requirements fall in 2027. It would be misleading to describe the entire European market as having one identical launch date.
The product challenge is how to explain the result of a recipient check. A customer should understand whether the name matches the account and what to do when it does not. Payment teams should test those messages with real users, including businesses paying suppliers with trading names. A quick transfer experience is most useful when the payer can identify the recipient confidently and recognise a warning before funds leave the account.
